Questions about Amelia Island
Key facts
Answer-first pages for the questions people actually ask about Amelia Island — the water temperature month by month, whether it snows, when the turtles nest, which airport to fly into. 24 answered and sourced; 36 still being researched.
Direct answers to the things people actually ask about Amelia Island, one question per page, answer first.
We publish 24 of them. There are 36 more on the list that we have not published, because each needs a fact we have not yet been able to confirm against a primary source — an opening time, a fee, a distance, an ordinance. Those are listed at the bottom of this page with the reason, and they will appear as they get sourced.
That is not false modesty. An answer page is the thing an AI assistant quotes back to someone standing in a car park, and a confidently wrong one does real damage.

How these are written
Every answer follows the same shape: the direct answer in the first sentence, then the reasoning and the numbers, then where to go next. If the honest answer is "no" or "not really", it says that first.
Every page names what backs it at the bottom — a NOAA station, an agency, our own verified records, or our own editorial judgement stated as ours. Where a number appears, it comes from our verified data rather than from another guide.
Three kinds of question we will not answer from impressions:
- Anything with a price. We hold no confirmed rates, menu prices or admission fees, so we do not publish any.
- Anything with an opening time. Same reason. Hours change seasonally here and a stale answer sends people to a locked door.
- Anything about safety or health. Those need a citable source, not a feeling.
Questions we have not answered yet

If you can point us at a primary source for any of these — a city ordinance, a park fee schedule, an operator's own page — tell us and we will publish it with the date we checked.

Frequently asked questions
- Are there alligators on Amelia Island?
- Yes. American alligators live in the fresh and brackish water inland on the island, including ponds and creeks within sight of the Egans Creek Greenway trails. They are not in the ocean, and they are not a reason to avoid the island — they are a reason to keep back from water edges.
- Are there lifeguards on Amelia Island beaches?
- Only seasonally, and only at a small number of accesses. Main Beach Park is the one we have confirmed as seasonally guarded. Most of the island’s thirteen miles of beach has no lifeguard at any time of year, so never assume cover.
- Are there sharks at Amelia Island?
- Yes. Sharks live in the Atlantic off Amelia Island, as they do the length of the Florida coast, and the tidal creeks and inlets are nursery habitat for several species. Bites are very rare. The hazards that actually catch people out here are rip currents and the tidal range.
- Does Amelia Island have clear blue water?
- No. The water off Amelia Island is green to greenish-brown rather than turquoise. Three things cause it: a wide shallow continental shelf, a 6 to 7 foot tidal range that keeps sediment in suspension, and tannic water draining out of the salt marsh behind the island.
- Does it snow on Amelia Island?
- No. Amelia Island averages a 45.4°F low and a 64.3°F high in January, its coldest month. A few nights a winter get near freezing and frost does occur, but measurable snow is not part of the climate record for this stretch of northeast Florida coast.
- How many days do you need on Amelia Island?
- Three days. That gives you one for downtown Fernandina Beach, one for the beach and Fort Clinch, and one for the marsh — kayaking, the Greenway, or the Cumberland Island ferry. Two days covers the essentials. One day works as a trip from Jacksonville but only scratches it.
- Is Amelia Island crowded in summer?
- Busy rather than overwhelmed. July is the peak month and Main Beach Park fills on weekends, but thirteen miles of beach absorbs a lot of people. The real pinch points are downtown parking, restaurant tables Thursday to Saturday, and any festival weekend.
- Is Amelia Island good for families?
- Yes, unusually so. The beach is flat and hard-packed, Main Beach Park has a free lot, restrooms, a playground and seasonal lifeguards, and Fort Clinch is a real nineteenth-century fort children can walk into. The ocean is 76°F or warmer from May to October.
