What county is Amelia Island in?

Nassau County is the top-right corner of Florida. Its eastern edge is Amelia Island, its northern boundary is the St Marys River and the Georgia state line, and its western half is the mainland around Yulee and Callahan.

Why the county matters to a visitor

Jurisdiction decides which rules apply and who to ask:

• Nassau County runs the county beach parks — Peters Point, Scott Road and Burney Park at American Beach — plus beach driving, the vehicle ramps, and ocean rescue and the flag policy.
• The City of Fernandina Beach runs the city beach accesses, downtown parking, the leash ordinance, the numbered street accesses and the Egans Creek Greenway.
• Florida State Parks runs Fort Clinch at the north end and Amelia Island State Park at the south.

Three different bodies, three sets of rules, on one thirteen-mile beach. If an answer about parking, dogs or driving on the sand seems to contradict another answer, it is usually because the two refer to different jurisdictions.

The mainland side

Cross the Shave Bridge west and you are in Yulee, which is where the county's supermarkets, big-box shopping and the I-95 interchange are. Several businesses that serve the island are addressed there — a five-digit house number (96xxx) is the giveaway.

Duval County (Jacksonville) is immediately south; Camden County, Georgia — St Marys and the Cumberland Island ferry — is immediately north.
