Amelia Island itineraries

Key facts

Amelia Island itineraries work best grouped by geography rather than interest: the north end and outdoors in the morning, downtown Fernandina Beach in the evening. Two area blocks a day is comfortable; three is a push on a thirteen-mile island.

Amelia Island rewards a plan, because its two halves are ten minutes apart and doubling back wastes the best hours of the day.

The shape of a good day here

Mornings belong to the outdoors. The island faces east, so sunrise is on the beach; the marsh trails are best in the first two hours of light; and in summer the afternoon thunderstorms make an early start the only reliable one.

Middays in summer belong to shade or water. In spring and autumn they are fine for anything.

Late afternoons belong to the beach or the shops. Evenings belong downtown — dinner on Centre Street, sunset on the river side.

That single pattern — north-end and outdoors early, downtown late — is most of what an Amelia Island itinerary needs.

Group by geography, not by category

The mistake visitors make is planning by interest and driving the length of the island three times. Group instead by area:

North end block: Fort Clinch State Park, Old Town Fernandina, the lighthouse view, Bosque Bello Cemetery.

Downtown block: Centre Street, the Amelia Island Museum of History, the marina, the shops, dinner and sunset.

Oceanside block: Main Beach Park, the Fletcher Avenue accesses, the Egans Creek Greenway.

South end block: Peters Point, American Beach and the A.L. Lewis Museum, Amelia Island State Park, the resorts.

Two blocks a day is comfortable. Three is a push.

Day trips, and what they cost you

Cumberland Island takes most of a day and a ferry reservation from St Marys, Georgia. Worth it on a four-day trip, not on a two-day one.

Kingsley Plantation, Fort George Island and the Talbot Islands sit on the drive south towards Jacksonville and can be strung together in half a day.

Jacksonville is forty minutes away and is the answer to a genuinely wet day.

What to book before you arrive

Beach horseback riding at Amelia Island State Park. The Cumberland Island ferry. Downtown dinner on a Friday or Saturday. Fort Clinch candlelight tours in the cooler months. Everything else on the island can be decided that morning.
