Is Amelia Island the same as Fernandina Beach?
Key facts
No, though the names are used interchangeably. Amelia Island is the barrier island itself. Fernandina Beach is the city occupying its northern half — the historic downtown, the beach accesses and the port. Everything in Fernandina Beach is on Amelia Island; the island’s southern half is not in the city.
This trips up almost every first-time visitor, and it matters for practical reasons: addresses, jurisdiction and which set of rules applies to the beach you are standing on.
The island
Amelia Island is the barrier island — the landmass, bounded by the Atlantic to the east, the Amelia River and the salt marsh to the west, Cumberland Sound to the north and Nassau Sound to the south. It is the geographic thing, and the name people use for the destination as a whole.
The city
Fernandina Beach is the incorporated city on the island's northern half. It holds the 50-block downtown historic district on the river, the numbered street grid, the municipal marina, the port and most of the island's year-round population. When you see "Fernandina Beach, FL" in an address, that is the postal city — which is why almost every business on the island, including several at the far south end, carries it.
The southern half
South of the city limits the island is unincorporated Nassau County: Summer Beach, American Beach, the Omni and Ritz-Carlton resort grounds, and Amelia Island State Park at the southern tip. Different jurisdiction, different beach parks, and in some cases different rules — beach driving, for example, is a county matter, not a city one.
Which name to search
For the destination, the island's name wins: it is what the tourism industry, the resorts and most visitors use. For anything municipal — parking, city beach accesses, the leash ordinance, pavilion bookings — search the city name, because that is the body that publishes it.
Our areas guide walks the island north to south and says what each district is actually for.
