Are there alligators on Amelia Island?

By Kaden Ewald, Editor Last updated How we verify

Key facts

Yes. American alligators live in the fresh and brackish water inland on the island, including ponds and creeks within sight of the Egans Creek Greenway trails. They are not in the ocean, and they are not a reason to avoid the island — they are a reason to keep back from water edges.

Alligators are native, common and entirely normal here. Northeast Florida is their range, and a barrier island with several hundred acres of freshwater marsh behind the dunes is good habitat.

Where you will see them

Egans Creek Greenway is the reliable place — three hundred acres of flat marsh trail with open water either side of the path. Alligators bask on the banks and float in the channels, sometimes a few yards from the trail. This is the single best wildlife walk on the island and the alligators are part of why.

They also occur in golf course ponds, retention ponds and the brackish creeks behind the island. If it is fresh or brackish water on this island, assume an alligator could be in it.

Where you will not see them

The ocean. Alligators are freshwater animals; they tolerate brackish water and are occasionally seen in tidal creeks, but the surf is not their habitat. Swimming in the Atlantic here is not an alligator question.

How to behave

  • Keep well back from any water edge — several yards, not a few feet. Most incidents involve someone at the waterline.
  • Never feed one. It is illegal in Florida and it is how a wild alligator learns to associate people with food.
  • Keep dogs leashed and away from the water. A dog at the edge of a Greenway channel is the single highest-risk thing you can do here, and the leash requirement exists partly for this.
  • Do not approach for a photograph. Use the zoom.
  • Give a crossing animal the whole trail. They move between water bodies; wait.

The other wildlife to expect

Dolphins in the river and the sound. Wading birds throughout the marsh, with a long list for birders. Sea turtles nesting on the beach from 1 May to 31 October. Right whales offshore in winter. Our outdoors guide covers where to find each of them.

What backs this answer: Consistent with our published /outdoors hub and Egans Creek Greenway page. Species range is not in dispute; no population figures are claimed.
