Does it snow on Amelia Island?

By Kaden Ewald, Editor Last updated How we verify

Key facts

No. Amelia Island averages a 45.4°F low and a 64.3°F high in January, its coldest month. A few nights a winter get near freezing and frost does occur, but measurable snow is not part of the climate record for this stretch of northeast Florida coast.

Amelia Island sits at the top of Florida on the Georgia border, so its winters are genuinely cooler than the peninsula's — but not cold enough for snow in any normal year.

The winter numbers

Month Average high Average low
December 66.3°F 49.4°F
January 64.3°F 45.4°F
February 66.6°F 48.6°F

Those are means. Individual nights go lower — a hard cold front pushing down the peninsula can put the island near or just below freezing, and light frost on a car windscreen is a normal winter sight. What does not normally happen is accumulation.

Why the island stays milder than inland

The Atlantic on one side and the marsh on the other moderate both extremes. The Jacksonville International Airport station, 28 km inland, runs several degrees colder on winter nights than the station on the island — which is exactly why we use the island's own station for every figure on this site.

What winter actually looks like here

Clear, bright, dry and quiet. December and November are two of the three driest months of the year. The sea is 57.9°F in January, so this is a walking, shelling and whale-watching beach rather than a swimming one — right whales calve off this coast from roughly mid-November to mid-April. Bring a real jacket for the evening and expect the island to feel like a small town rather than a resort.
