Is Amelia Island good for families?

By Kaden Ewald, Editor Last updated How we verify

Key facts

Yes, unusually so. The beach is flat and hard-packed, Main Beach Park has a free lot, restrooms, a playground and seasonal lifeguards, and Fort Clinch is a real nineteenth-century fort children can walk into. The ocean is 76°F or warmer from May to October.

What makes it work for families is that the good things are free or nearly free, and close together.

The beach

Thirteen miles of it, and the sand is hard-packed and flat rather than soft and steep — which matters with a pushchair, a wagon or a bike. Main Beach Park is the family access: free paved lot, restrooms, boardwalk over the dune, playground, picnic tables, and the only seasonal lifeguard cover we have confirmed on the island.

At low tide the exposed sandbars become wadeable shallows, which is the best thing on the island for small children — and the reason to plan around the tide rather than the clock.

Fort Clinch

Fort Clinch State Park is the single best-value family outing here: a genuine brick fort with ramparts, tunnels and a parade ground you walk into rather than look at, plus its own beach, a fishing pier and six miles of off-road bike trail through maritime forest.

The marsh

Egans Creek Greenway is flat, free and three hundred acres, with alligators visible from the path and a long bird list — genuinely exciting for children and a walk rather than a hike.

Two things to plan around

Lifeguards are the exception, not the rule. Most accesses have none at any time of year. Keep small children within arm's reach and prefer the guarded access when it is staffed. See are there lifeguards.

Water temperature. The ocean is 71.2°F in April and 57.9°F in January. If swimming is the point of the trip, come between May and October — our water temperature by month page has every month.

Also worth knowing

Sea turtle nesting season runs 1 May to 31 October, and the rules — fill in holes, take gear off the beach overnight, lights off the sand — are a genuinely good thing to teach children on a beach holiday. See when do sea turtles nest.
