Where is the best sunset on Amelia Island?
Key facts
Not on the beach. Amelia Island faces east, so the ocean gets the sunrise. Sunset happens over the Amelia River and the salt marsh on the island’s west side — downtown Fernandina Beach, the harbour marina and the marsh overlooks are where to watch it.
This is the single most common orientation mistake visitors make here, and it costs people an evening.
The island faces east
Amelia Island is a barrier island running roughly north–south, with the Atlantic on its east side and the Amelia River and marsh on its west side. So:
- Sunrise is the beach event, over the ocean.
- Sunset is a river-and-marsh event, from the other side of the island.
Standing on the beach at 7pm in June gets you a nice evening and no sunset.
Where to watch it
Downtown Fernandina Beach is the obvious answer. The historic district sits on the river, and Centre Street runs west directly at the water — the view down the street at the right time of year is the reason so many photographs of this town look the way they do.
Fernandina Harbor Marina, at the foot of Centre Street, puts you at the water's edge with the marsh and Cumberland Sound opening out to the north.
The marsh overlooks on the island's western edge give you the wider version: several thousand acres of spartina going gold, with the mainland behind it.
On the water. Evening boat trips out of the marina cover the river, the marsh and the sound.
Timing
Our beach conditions page computes today's sunrise and sunset locally rather than fetching them, so those two times are right even when every data feed is down. In summer the light goes late; in November and December it is gold by four in the afternoon, which is one of the underrated pleasures of a winter visit.
