When is right whale season on Amelia Island?

Key facts

North Atlantic right whales calve off this stretch of coast from roughly mid-November to mid-April, which is why NOAA Fisheries protects the offshore waters seasonally. Sightings from shore are possible but uncommon — they are luck, not a schedule.

The waters off northeast Florida and southern Georgia are the only known calving ground for the North Atlantic right whale, one of the most endangered large whales in the world. Mothers arrive in late autumn, calve through the winter, and are gone by spring.

The season

Roughly mid-November to mid-April, which is the window NOAA Fisheries uses for its seasonal management areas and vessel speed restrictions off this coast. February is the heart of it.

Seeing one from shore

Possible, and uncommon. Right whales come in close — sometimes within a few hundred yards of the beach — but they are slow, dark and low in the water, with no dorsal fin. What people spot is usually the V-shaped spout or a black back rolling.

The realistic approach is a calm, clear winter morning, a high vantage point and patience. The Fort Clinch shoreline at the north end and the fishing piers are where people scan from. Binoculars matter more than location.

Why it is worth knowing about even if you see nothing

The population is small enough that every calf counts, and the biggest threats are vessel strikes and fishing-gear entanglement — which is why the speed rules exist. The Right Whale Festival marks the start of the season each autumn and is the best place to learn what the recovery effort actually involves.

If you are on the water in season and see one, federal law requires you to stay well back. Report a sighting to the NOAA hotline rather than approaching.
