What airport do you fly into for Amelia Island?

By Kaden Ewald, Editor Last updated How we verify

Key facts

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is the one to book. It is the closest commercial airport to Amelia Island and sits on the northern edge of Jacksonville, so you do not have to cross the city to reach the island. Almost every visitor arriving by air comes through JAX.

JAX is the answer

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is the practical choice for Amelia Island. It is the nearest commercial airport, and — importantly — it is on the north side of Jacksonville, the same side as the island, so the drive does not involve crossing the city or its downtown traffic.

The alternatives, and why they are usually worse

Jacksonville Executive at Craig and Fernandina Beach Municipal handle general aviation, not scheduled commercial service. Fernandina Beach Municipal is on the island itself and is the arrival point for private aircraft.

Savannah/Hilton Head (SAV) to the north and Orlando (MCO) to the south are both much further and only make sense if the fare difference is large or you are combining destinations.

Getting from JAX to the island

Options, in the order most visitors use them:

  1. Hire a car at the airport. The island is small but spread out, and there is no comprehensive public transport — see getting around.
  2. A pre-booked shuttle or car service. Several operate the airport run; book ahead rather than assuming availability on arrival.
  3. Rideshare. Available, though coverage back out of the island is less reliable than into it, particularly late.

We do not publish drive times, distances or fares here, because we have not verified them against a primary source — and a guide that guesses at a transfer time is how people miss a flight. Our getting here page covers the route itself.

Do you need a car?

Mostly yes. Downtown Fernandina Beach is genuinely walkable and the island is flat enough to cycle, so a stay based downtown can work without one. A stay at the south-end resorts without a car will feel confined. See getting around.

What backs this answer: Verified geography. Drive times, distances and fares are deliberately omitted as unverified — see docs/DATA-SOURCES.md.
