How many days do you need on Amelia Island?

Key facts

Three days. That gives you one for downtown Fernandina Beach, one for the beach and Fort Clinch, and one for the marsh — kayaking, the Greenway, or the Cumberland Island ferry. Two days covers the essentials. One day works as a trip from Jacksonville but only scratches it.

The island is small — you can drive its length in twenty minutes — but it holds three quite different days, and they do not overlap much.

One day

A good day trip, particularly from Jacksonville. Park downtown, walk the historic district, eat on the river, and spend the afternoon at Fort Clinch or on the beach. You will leave having seen the postcard and missed the marsh entirely. See our one-day itinerary.

Two days

Enough for the essentials without rushing: a downtown day and a beach-and-fort day, with an evening on the river for the sunset. This is the most common length of stay and it works.

Three days

The right answer. The third day is the one that makes the trip: get onto the water in the salt marsh behind the island, walk the Egans Creek Greenway, or take the ferry to Cumberland Island — which is a full day in itself and needs booking well ahead.

A week

Comfortable rather than stretched, if the beach is the point. Thirteen miles of sand, seven distinct beach accesses with facilities, two fishing piers, four state parks within reach, and enough restaurants downtown to eat somewhere different every night. A week suits families and anyone who wants the beach to be the holiday rather than the sightseeing.

What decides it more than the number of days

The month. In April the air is perfect and the water is 71.2°F, so a beach-focused week is the wrong shape — go long on trails and short on swimming. In October you get 80.1°F days and a 76.0°F ocean, and a week on the sand makes sense. Our weather by month page lays out the trade-off for every month.

The tide. A 6 to 7 foot range means the beach you get depends on when you walk onto it. Check the tides when you plan the days, not when you arrive.
