Date night on Amelia Island

Key facts

A good Amelia Island evening runs in one direction: drinks at sunset on the downtown waterfront, which faces west over the marina, then dinner in the Victorian historic district within walking distance, then the eight blocks of Centre Street to walk afterwards.

Our picks

The Salty Pelican Bar & Grill

Downtown Fernandina Beach

A two-storey seafood bar and grill at the foot of Centre Street with a rooftop deck over the Amelia River and the shrimp docks. Downtown Fernandina Beach's most-used sunset spot, and a reliable stop for fried shrimp, grouper and a cold beer.

Café Karibo

Downtown Fernandina Beach

A long-running independent café and restaurant in a converted downtown building on 3rd Street, with a large tree-shaded courtyard and the adjoining Karibrew brew pub. Sandwiches, salads and brunch, and one of the most searched-for names on Amelia Island.

Fernandina Harbor Marina

Downtown Fernandina Beach · free

The working marina at the foot of Centre Street on the Amelia River, with the shrimp fleet, boat tours and charters, a public boardwalk and the island's best sunset view. The reason downtown Fernandina Beach faces the water it does.

Downtown Fernandina Beach

Downtown Fernandina Beach

The 50-block downtown historic district on Amelia Island's river side, centred on Centre Street between 8th Street and the Fernandina Harbor Marina. Victorian storefronts, the island's densest concentration of restaurants and bars, and the Amelia Island Museum of History.

Details unconfirmed

The Palace Saloon

Downtown Fernandina Beach

A Centre Street bar in a 1903 building with a hand-carved mahogany bar, embossed tin ceiling and painted murals, carrying a long-standing claim to be Florida's oldest continuously operating drinking establishment.

The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island

Summer Beach

An oceanfront luxury resort on the island's Summer Beach stretch, with its own dune walkovers, spa, pools and the fine-dining restaurant Salt. The island's top-tier property and the base for the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance week.

Elizabeth Pointe Lodge

Fernandina Beach Oceanside

A shingle-style oceanfront inn on South Fletcher Avenue in Fernandina Beach, built in the manner of a 1890s Nantucket lifesaving station. Small, directly on the sand, with breakfast included and a wraparound porch facing the Atlantic.

Where these are on the island

Map of Amelia Island, Florida Amelia Island runs about thirteen miles north to south. The Atlantic Ocean is on the east side and the Amelia River and salt marsh on the west. The best thing about a date night on Amelia Island is that the whole evening fits inside eight blocks, so nobody has to drive after the first drink.

The sequence

Sunset, on the river. This is the part visitors get backwards. The island faces east — the Atlantic side gets sunrise. The sunset happens over the Amelia River on the downtown side, behind the marina and the working shrimp fleet.

The rooftop decks at the bottom of Centre Street are the set-piece, and the demand for those tables at golden hour is entirely predictable. Arrive well before sunset, or drink at the bar downstairs and take the view from the marina boardwalk, which is free and has the same sky.

Check the sunset time before you book. On this coast it moves by well over an hour across the year, and our beach conditions page carries today's.

Dinner, on foot. Downtown carries more range than a town this size should — the fine-dining rooms, the courtyard restaurants, Italian, Cuban, seafood done properly. All of it is inside a fifteen-minute walk of the waterfront, which means you choose a restaurant rather than a car park.

Afterwards, the street. Eight blocks of Victorian and Queen Anne storefronts, lit, quiet by ten. It is a genuinely good street to walk after dinner, and the Palace Saloon — carved mahogany bar, embossed tin ceiling, and a long-standing claim to being Florida's oldest continuously operating bar — is a good last stop.

Book these

Dinner, Thursday through Saturday. Downtown fills, the good rooms are small, and a walk-in at eight on a Saturday is a gamble.

Any festival weekend, well ahead. Early May is the Shrimp Festival and March is the Concours; both book out the island's restaurants as well as its rooms.

A courtyard table if the weather is right. Several of the best rooms downtown are outdoor spaces behind the storefronts, and in spring and autumn they are the most pleasant seats on the island.

The south-end alternative

The Ritz-Carlton and the Omni hold the island's fine-dining end, and if you want a tasting-menu register rather than a walkable evening, that is where it is.

The trade-off is that you are inside a resort for the whole evening, and there is nothing to walk to afterwards. It is a different kind of night — book it deliberately rather than by default.

Two alternatives to dinner

A sunset boat trip from the Fernandina Harbor Marina. Operators run river and marsh cruises, dolphins are near-guaranteed, and the light on the marsh in the last hour is better than any table view. Check what is currently running.

Sunrise instead. Unromantic-sounding and better than it sounds: an empty Atlantic beach at 6.30 with coffee, then breakfast in a downtown courtyard. Nobody else is doing it.

Where to stay for this

Downtown or oceanside Fletcher Avenue — both put you within walking distance or a five-minute drive of the whole evening. A south-end resort means a fifteen-minute drive each way and a designated driver.

Practical notes

Reservation policies, hours and which rooms are currently open all change, and several downtown kitchens close two days a week from autumn through spring. We mark every venue whose details we have not confirmed against the business. Check directly before you build an evening around a specific place.

Downtown Fernandina Beach, because the whole evening fits inside eight walkable blocks — sunset drinks on the river-facing waterfront, dinner in the historic district, and a Victorian street to walk afterwards without driving.
Which side of Amelia Island has the sunset?
The river side, downtown. The island faces east, so the Atlantic beaches get the sunrise and the sunset happens over the Amelia River behind the marina and the shrimp fleet.
Do you need a reservation for dinner on Amelia Island?
Thursday through Saturday downtown, yes — the good rooms are small and fill. On festival weekends in early May and March, book well ahead along with accommodation.
