Here is the thing visitors get wrong about waterfront dining on Amelia Island: the water is usually the river, not the ocean.
Downtown Fernandina Beach sits on the Amelia River, on the island's western side. That is where the marina is, where the shrimp boats work, and where the restaurants with real water views are. Because it faces west, it is also where the sunset is.
The ocean side — Fletcher Avenue and the south-end resorts — has restaurants near the beach, and a handful with a genuine Atlantic view from a resort building, but the dune line means most oceanside dining is beach-adjacent rather than beach-facing.
The river side: sunset and shrimp boats
The cluster at the bottom of Centre Street is the heart of it. The Salty Pelican has the rooftop deck everyone means when they say sunset drinks downtown — two storeys at the corner where Centre Street meets the waterfront, looking west across the river to the Georgia marsh. Brett's Waterway Café sits directly on the marina docks.
What you are looking at is a working port: the Fernandina Harbor Marina, the shrimp fleet, and the paper mill stacks on the north end. Some visitors find the industrial edge jarring. It is also the reason this is a real town rather than a resort strip.
Timing the sunset table
The rooftops are small and the demand is entirely predictable. Two strategies work: arrive well before sunset and hold the table, or eat at the downstairs bar and accept the view from ground level. Turning up at golden hour without a plan means a wait.
Check the sunset time before you book — on this coast it swings by well over an hour across the year, and our beach conditions page carries today's figure.
The ocean side
Oceanside dining on Fletcher Avenue is casual: beach bars and grills within a short walk of the sand. The resort restaurants on the south end — at the Ritz-Carlton and the Omni — include rooms with a true Atlantic view, and they are the reliable option for ocean-facing dinner, at resort prices.
One geographic note that matters: Amelia Island faces east. The ocean side gets the sunrise, and the sunrise here is the better show. Breakfast at the beach, dinner on the river, is the correct order of operations.
Practical notes
Hours, menus and reservation policies change constantly and we mark every venue whose details we have not confirmed against a primary source. Check with the restaurant before you plan an evening around it, especially in the shoulder seasons when downtown kitchens cut back their days.
