Summer is peak season and the warmest ocean on the Atlantic coast north of Florida's peninsula: 84.6°F in August. It is also 90.7°F in July with humidity to match, and a hard afternoon thunderstorm most days from June through September.
Both of those are manageable. The shape of a good summer day here is fixed: beach in the morning, indoors or downtown from mid-afternoon.
Plan around the tide, not the clock
This matters more in summer than any other season. The tidal range is 6 to 7.4 feet on a very flat beach, so at low water you get hundreds of yards of hard sand and the sandbars exposed for wading — which is the single best thing on this island for small children. At high water on a narrow access there is very little beach at all.
A low-tide morning in July is the best beach experience the island produces. Check today's tides before you load the car.
The storms
June to September averages 6.12″, 4.96″, 6.39″ and 7.19″ — but across only about 9 to 10 wet days each. That is convective rain: a hard storm that builds inland, rolls east and clears, rather than all-day drizzle. A 60% chance of rain in a summer forecast usually means one hour of weather somewhere in the afternoon.
They are not harmless. Be off the water by early afternoon — that goes for kayaking, fishing and surfing alike.
What summer is actually good for
Getting children into the ocean. June is the sweet spot: 80.8°F water, small surf, and the warmest the sea gets without July's air temperature.
The water, generally. Water temperature by month holds 76°F or better from May through October.
Sea turtles. Nesting season runs 1 May to 31 October, nesting peaks in early summer, and nests laid in May and June start hatching from July. Dawn walks in August are when you are most likely to see a fresh track. The rules — fill in holes, gear off the beach overnight, lights off the sand — are enforced, and they are a good thing to teach children on a beach holiday.
Fishing. The bait moves and so does everything else. Fish the moving water either side of a tide change; slack high and slack low are the dead hours.
What to avoid in summer
Anything inland and unshaded between eleven and four. The Greenway has no shade at all, and the Fort Clinch ramparts are brick in full sun. Both are excellent at eight in the morning and punishing at two in the afternoon.
The two things to know before booking
July is the busiest month. Everything needs booking, and the lot at Main Beach fills on weekends. Thirteen miles of beach absorbs a lot, though — walk five minutes from any boardwalk and the density drops sharply. See is Amelia Island crowded in summer.
Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, with the statistical peak in early September. That is a season, not a forecast — see our hurricane season guide.
