Downtown Fernandina Beach activity
Amelia Island offers surf fishing along thirteen miles of Atlantic beach, two long piers over moving water at the island's north and south tips, inshore charters into the marsh and sound, and offshore boats from the Fernandina Harbor Marina.
Amelia Island fishes well for one structural reason: it sits between two inlets, and inlets move water.
The Fort Clinch pier, at the island's northern point inside Fort Clinch State Park, reaches out over the mouth of Cumberland Sound. The sound funnels an enormous volume of water past it on every tide, which concentrates bait and therefore fish. It comes inside the park's per-vehicle entry fee, along with the 1847 fort and two beaches.
The George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier, at the island's southern tip in Amelia Island State Park, is the decommissioned span across Nassau Sound — now running most of a mile out over open water. One of the better shore-fishing spots in northeast Florida for the same reason.
Both are exposed. No shade, wind, and sun off the water.
Thirteen miles of Atlantic beach, and you can fish most of it. The firm sand and gentle slope make wading and casting straightforward.
Beach driving, permitted at designated Nassau County ramps only and under county rules, is the main reason anglers use it — carrying a lot of gear a long way over soft sand is the alternative. See our beach driving page, and check the county's current rules first.
The Amelia River, the tidal creeks and Nassau Sound behind the island are classic southeastern inshore water: Spartina marsh, oyster bars, mudflats and moving water. Redfish, spotted seatrout and flounder are the usual targets, with sheepshead around structure.
Charters run from the Fernandina Harbor Marina downtown and elsewhere on the island. A guide is worth it here — the marsh is a maze, the productive water changes with the tide, and local knowledge is most of the game.
Boats run out of the marina for bottom fishing and further offshore. This is a full-day proposition and weather-dependent, particularly in summer when afternoon thunderstorms build most days.
The tidal range on this coast is several feet, and it decides everything: which creeks are navigable, where the fish are holding, and whether the beach strip you drove onto will still be there.
Read the tide table before you go. Today's high and low are on our beach conditions page, from the NOAA station at Fernandina Beach.
Most anglers need a Florida saltwater fishing licence. There are exemptions — by age, by residency, and in some cases when fishing from a licensed pier or a charter — and they change.
Bag limits, size limits and closed seasons are set by the FWC and change by species and by year.
Check the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission directly before you fish. We are not publishing licence requirements or limits here, because getting them wrong costs someone a fine and this is precisely the sort of information that changes annually.
North Atlantic right whales calve off this coast in winter, and the offshore waters carry federal protections in season with vessel speed rules. Sea turtles nest on the beaches roughly May to October. Manatees are present in the river and creeks. All are federally protected and all carry approach restrictions — know them before you take a boat out.
Bait and tackle shops operate on the island; we have not confirmed which are currently trading and are not naming any.
Weather. Near-daily afternoon thunderstorms from June through September. Be off the water early. Lightning over an open pier or a marsh is the real hazard here.
Sun. No shade on either pier or on the beach. This coast is more punishing than the temperature suggests.
Which charter operators and tackle shops currently trade, pier fees and any licence exemptions, current FWC limits and seasons. See our editorial policy for why we label rather than guess.
34 businesses on or near the island offer this. Each carries an address, telephone number and official website we confirmed on 10 September 2026 — hours, prices and availability are not confirmed, and most run by reservation and by season, so book direct.

Details unconfirmed
The stretch of Amelia Island shoreline north of Main Beach toward the Fort Clinch jetties, reached from the northern Fletcher Avenue accesses. Wide, quiet sand with a working-port view, no facilities, and the island's strongest currents near the jetties.
