You do not need a map of Amelia Island so much as you need four facts about its shape. Get these and the rest follows.
The four facts
1. It runs north to south, about thirteen miles. Fort Clinch at the northern tip, Amelia Island State Park at the southern one, roughly fifteen minutes' driving between them.
2. The Atlantic is on the east. The Amelia River and several thousand acres of salt marsh are on the west. The beach runs almost the whole eastern side.
3. Downtown Fernandina Beach is on the west — the river side. Two miles from the sand. This is the single most consequential thing to know about the island, and it catches out nearly every first-time visitor.
4. Two bridges connect it to the mainland. The Shave Bridge on A1A from Yulee to the west, and the Nassau Sound bridge from the south. Both carry everything.
The roads
A1A is the spine, running the length of the island. It changes name as it goes: 8th Street through town, First Coast Highway on the south end.
Fletcher Avenue runs along the ocean side, north and south, and gives access to the numbered beach accesses.
Atlantic Avenue and Sadler Road are the two main cross-island connectors — the roads that get you from A1A and downtown over to the beach.
That is essentially the whole network. If you know A1A, Fletcher, Atlantic and Sadler, you can navigate the island.
North to south, the districts
Fort Clinch State Park — the northern tip. Fort, two beaches, pier, trails.
Old Town Fernandina — the 1811 Spanish plat, north of downtown. Residential, quiet, and Bosque Bello Cemetery nearby.
Downtown Fernandina Beach — the fifty-block historic district on the river. Dining, shopping, the museum, the marina, and the sunset.
Fernandina Beach oceanside — the Fletcher Avenue strip on the ocean, with Main Beach Park, Seaside Park and the numbered accesses. Five to eight minutes from downtown.
Summer Beach — oceanfront condominiums and the Ritz-Carlton.
Amelia Island Plantation — the large gated resort development, largely operated as the Omni.
American Beach — the historic community founded in 1935, with Burney Park adjacent.
The south end — resorts, golf, and progressively emptier beach.
Amelia Island State Park — the undeveloped southern tip at Nassau Sound.
Yulee and the mainland — west across the bridge: supermarkets, chain retail, I-95, and the route to the airport.
See our areas guide for each in detail.
What the geography means for your trip
You cannot walk to dinner and to the beach. Pick one and drive to the other, or stay oceanside for a short drive to both. See where to stay.
Sunrise is on the ocean; sunset is on the river. Beach early, downtown late.
Group your days by area, not by interest. Two area blocks a day is comfortable. Planning by category means driving thirteen miles repeatedly. See our itineraries.

About this map
The map above is a schematic. The coastline is drawn to be recognisable rather than
survey-accurate, but every pin is placed from the location's real latitude and longitude,
so relative positions and distances are honest. There is a scale bar on it.
We have deliberately not embedded a third-party interactive map. One would load an external
script, track you, and fail offline — on a beach with one bar of signal, which is exactly
where a visitor needs this page. What we do instead:
- Every entity page on this site carries a Get directions link that opens your own maps
application with the right destination, which is what you actually want in the car.
- Every entity page carries its own locator map showing where it sits on the island.
/api/entities.json publishes coordinates for every listing, so you
can load them into whatever map you prefer.
If you want the island on paper, this page prints cleanly — the print stylesheet keeps the
map and the distance table and drops the site furniture.
