The Amelia Hotel at the Beach is a small independent hotel on South Fletcher Avenue, and its usefulness is entirely about where it is.
The location argument, again
The oceanside strip is the most practical place to stay on Amelia Island, for one reason: you walk to the beach and you are five to eight minutes from downtown.
Downtown Fernandina Beach — the Victorian district, the twenty-plus restaurants, the marina and the sunset — sits on the Amelia River, two miles from the sand. Stay downtown and you drive to the beach. Stay at a south-end resort and you drive fifteen minutes to dinner. Stay here and both are short.
What it is
A small, independently run hotel across from the beach accesses, with breakfast included and a modest room standard. Not a resort, not a boutique property, not a historic inn — a straightforward place to sleep on the right side of the island.
That is not damning. On an island where accommodation is the expensive part of a trip and the days are largely free, a straightforward room in the best location is a rational choice.
Who it suits
Anyone whose trip is about the island rather than the hotel. If your days are Fort Clinch, the beach, downtown dinners and a kayak trip, the room is somewhere to shower and sleep, and paying resort rates for it is money not spent on the days.
Couples and small families on a short trip who want the sand on foot.
Anyone priced out of the oceanfront but unwilling to stay on the mainland.
What you give up
Resort facilities — no golf, spa, tennis or children's programme. Character relative to a downtown historic inn. And likely scale: a small independent hotel means a small front desk and limited hours on it.
Beach access
Ask specifically whether the hotel has a private dune walkover or whether you use one of the City of Fernandina Beach numbered public accesses across the road, and how far that is.
This matters and the answer is often "public access, two minutes" — which is entirely fine and is not the same as "on the beach." The numbered accesses are free, well distributed along Fletcher, and generally quieter than the parks.
The sunrise, which is the real amenity
Amelia Island faces east. From here you can be on the sand for sunrise over the Atlantic within a few minutes of getting up, and at 6.30 in summer you will have thirteen miles of beach essentially to yourself. It costs nothing and it is the best thing the island does.
Sunset is on the river, downtown — a short drive west. Do them in that order.
Turtle season
Roughly May to October: close blinds after dark if your room faces the beach. Hatchlings orient toward the brightest horizon and a lit window sends them inland.
Practical notes
Parking along Fletcher Avenue is limited and the residential side streets have enforced restrictions. Confirm the hotel's own parking when you book.
Beach lots fill by late morning in season — another argument for walking rather than driving to the sand.
