Dolphin Tours on Amelia Island
Key facts
Bottlenose dolphins are resident in the Amelia River and Cumberland Sound rather than seasonal, so sightings on the water here are regular. Seven boat operators work that water — we have not confirmed which of them run dolphin-specific trips, so ask.
The useful fact about dolphins here is that they live here.
Resident, not seasonal
Bottlenose dolphins are resident in the Amelia River, Cumberland Sound and the inlets around this island rather than seasonal visitors. That changes the proposition entirely: there is no dolphin season to plan around, and any trip out on that water in any month has a reasonable chance of them.
It also means no operator should be promising you a sighting, and you should be wary of one that does. These are wild animals in a working waterway.
The water is the river, not the ocean
This matters and people get it wrong. Amelia Island's east side is the Atlantic beach; the dolphins are mostly on the west side — the Amelia River, the marsh creeks behind the island, and Cumberland Sound at the north end where the St Marys River meets the sea.
So a dolphin trip here leaves from the harbour marina at the bottom of Centre Street and goes north or into the back marsh. It is sheltered water, which makes it a better bet with small children than anything offshore.
The tide still governs departure times — the range is 6 to 7.4 ft and that volume moving through the inlets produces real current, so an awkward hour is your skipper working around the water.
Who to ring
What we have not confirmed is which of these operators runs a dolphin-specific trip as against a general sightseeing run that often sees them. One is called Sea Dolphin Charters, which is a strong hint and not evidence, and we are not going to promote a name into a claim. Ask directly: is this a wildlife trip, and where does it go?

No prices, times or durations appear on this site for any of them, because we have confirmed none.
Doing it free
Two spots, both on land and both free.
The harbour marina — dolphins work the channel and the shrimp docks, and people see them from the waterfront regularly.
The Fort Clinch jetties, inside Fort Clinch State Park at the north end, where deep fast water meets structure. Park entry applies; see the beach and pier.
Neither is a guarantee. Both are a pleasant hour with a decent chance, and the pier is a good vantage point for the winter right whale season too.
When
Any month. Early morning for the calmest water, the best light and, from June to September, for beating the near-daily afternoon thunderstorm.
Related: boat tours for the wider list, kayaking for the marsh at eye level, and sunset cruises for the other reason to be on that water.
We publish no prices, times or durations for any operator on this site, because we have confirmed none. The address, telephone number and official website below were checked against each operator’s own listing on 10 September 2026 — ring them.
