The marsh behind Amelia Island is the better half of the island and it is invisible from any road. A boat is the easiest way into it, and the marina at the foot of Centre Street is where almost everything leaves from.
What the different trips actually are
River and marsh cruises. The standard trip: out of Fernandina Harbor Marina, up the Amelia River, into the creeks and out towards Cumberland Sound. Covered, narrated, and the easiest way to see the marsh without paddling.
Eco and dolphin trips. Smaller boats, shallower water, further into the creeks. Bottlenose dolphins are resident here rather than seasonal, so sightings are regular — see where to see dolphins.
Tiki boats and party pontoons. Slow, open, sociable, and confined to sheltered water.
Sunset cruises. The island faces east, so the sunset is a river-and-marsh event rather than a beach one — a boat on the west side at the right hour is the best seat there is. See sunrise and sunset.
Pirate trips. For children, and they know exactly what they are.
The tide matters more than the forecast
The range here is 6 to 7.4 ft — large for Florida — and it decides where a boat can go. On a low tide a lot of the back marsh is mud rather than channel, so shallow-draft trips run to the tide table rather than to a convenient departure time. If an operator offers you an odd hour, take it: they are working around the water, not around you.

What you will see
Dolphins, regularly. Wading birds, near-certainly — this is a barrier-island estuary with a long list. The Fernandina shrimping fleet, which still lands here. Cumberland Island's south end from the water, if the trip goes that far north. In winter, right whales calve offshore, though you will not see them from a marsh boat.
Practical notes
Summer afternoons. Near-daily thunderstorms from June to September. Morning trips, and expect cancellations for lightning — which is the operator being sensible.
Booking. Most of these boats take a limited number of people, so a group means a bigger boat or two boats. Book direct.
What we do not publish. No prices, no departure times and no durations for any operator on this site, because we have confirmed none of them. Every operator below carries a street address, telephone number and official website we checked against their own listing on 10 September 2026 — call them.
