Camping near Amelia Island

By Kaden Ewald, Editor Last updated How we verify

Key facts

Fort Clinch State Park has the only campground on Amelia Island — two of them, one in the woods on the river and one behind the ocean dune, both reservable through Florida State Parks. Little Talbot Island is the alternative, 25 minutes south.

There is one campground on Amelia Island, and it happens to be inside the best thing on the island.

Fort Clinch State Park

Fort Clinch occupies 1,400 acres at the northern tip and holds two campgrounds: one in the maritime woods beside the Amelia River, one behind the dune on the Atlantic side. Both take tents and RVs, both are reserved through Florida State Parks, and the ocean one is the reason people book months out.

What you get by staying inside the gate is the park after the day visitors leave: a masonry fort begun in 1847, two beaches, a fishing pier, a mile-long oak-canopy entrance drive and a six-mile off-road bike trail through the hammock — all of it a short walk or ride from the tent, and none of it requiring the drive back in.

We have not confirmed site numbers, hook-ups, fees or the reservation window. Florida State Parks holds all of that and it is the only source worth quoting.

Little Talbot Island

About 25 minutes south, Little Talbot Island is one of the few undeveloped barrier islands left in northeast Florida — five miles of Atlantic beach, maritime forest, marsh trails and no development behind the dune. Its campground is also reservable through Florida State Parks and also fills on holiday weekends. If Fort Clinch is booked, this is the answer.

The mainland, honestly

There are RV parks on the mainland side, off the A1A corridor. We have confirmed nothing about any of them — not addresses, not whether they take tents, not whether they are open — so we are not going to list them as though we had. One camper-trailer rental operator on the island is listed below, which is a different proposition again: they bring the unit, you still need somewhere to put it.

Season

October to April is the camping season here, and it is not a close call.

  • November is the driest month of the year at 1.87 inches, with an average high of 72°F.
  • June to September brings 5 to 7 inches a month across roughly nine rain days, a thunderstorm most afternoons, and July at 90.7°F with matching humidity.
  • Insects in the marsh from spring through autumn are not a footnote. Repellent is equipment.

Hurricane season runs June to November — see hurricane season before booking a late-summer week.
