Fernandina Beach Oceanside activity
Amelia Island is flat and cycles well: a paved multi-use path along part of A1A, a six-mile off-road trail through maritime hammock inside Fort Clinch State Park, and thirteen miles of firm beach sand rideable on fat tyres at low tide.
Amelia Island is one of the better cycling islands on the Florida coast, for the simple reason that there is not a hill on it.
The Amelia Island Trail — a paved multi-use path running along part of A1A, separated from traffic, connecting a useful stretch of the island. This is the safe, easy, everyone-can-do-it option.
The Fort Clinch off-road trail — six miles through maritime hammock inside Fort Clinch State Park, under live oak and palmetto. This is the best actual riding on the island: sand, roots, shade and no traffic. It comes inside the park's per-vehicle entry fee along with the fort, two beaches and the pier.
The beach — thirteen miles of it, and the sand here is firm enough for fat tyres at low tide. This is the ride people remember.
At low tide there is a wide strip of packed sand you can ride for miles. At high tide there is essentially nothing — the water is against the dune in places and what remains is soft.
Check the tide before you set out. Today's high and low are on our beach conditions page. Riding out on a falling tide and back on a rising one is the mistake; do the opposite.
You need wide tyres. A road bike will not work on sand at all, and a standard hybrid struggles.
This is the practical case, and it is strongest if you are staying oceanside on Fletcher Avenue:
To the beach — the numbered public accesses are minutes away and there is nowhere to park a bike problem.
Into downtown — five to eight minutes by car, and a genuinely pleasant flat ride, which means dinner on Centre Street without a designated driver.
Around downtown — the historic district is eight flat blocks. A bike is faster than circling for a parking space.
Between beach accesses — including the ones with no parking, which is how you find empty sand in season.
End to end. The island is thirteen miles long. Downtown to the south end and back is a serious ride in Florida heat and humidity, on roads that carry all the island's traffic in places. Doable for a fit cyclist, not a casual afternoon.
A1A carries everything, including trucks, and the shoulder varies. Use the paved trail where it exists rather than the carriageway.
Heat and humidity are the real risk from May to September. Ride at first light. Carry more water than you think — there are no fountains on the trail or the beach.
Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily from June through September. Lightning on an open beach or a treeless stretch of trail is genuinely dangerous. Be back before early afternoon.
Insect repellent for the hammock trails from spring through autumn.
Bike rental, including fat-tyre bikes and often e-bikes, is available on the island, and many resorts and rentals include bikes or can arrange them.
We have not confirmed which operators are currently trading, so we are not naming any — see our editorial policy. Ask your accommodation first; it is often the easiest route.
Roughly May to October. Ride on the firm wet sand rather than up near the dune, keep off marked nests, and be alert at first light when nesting surveys are underway.
The Talbot Islands to the south have trails, and Fort George Island's sand roads under live oak are excellent riding. Both are a short drive with bikes on the car.
The Amelia Island Trail's exact routing and current length, the Fort Clinch trail's mileage and condition, and which rental operators are trading. On our verification list.

Fernandina Beach's busiest and most amenity-heavy oceanfront park, at the east end of Atlantic Avenue. Large free parking lot, restrooms, playground, volleyball, and food and mini-golf across the street — the default choice for a family beach day on Amelia Island.
A free family festival marking the North Atlantic right whale calving season, which happens in the waters off this stretch of Florida and Georgia coast each winter — one of the very few places on Earth where these whales give birth.
Details unconfirmed
Amelia Island gets small, inconsistent surf most of the year, with the best waves arriving on winter groundswell and around passing tropical systems. It is a beginner and longboard coast rather than a destination for experienced surfers.
