Fernandina Beach drops a shrimp at midnight, and once you know the town's history it is the only sensible choice.
Why a shrimp
This is a working shrimping port with a claim to the origins of the modern shrimping industry. The fleet is tied up at the marina at the bottom of Centre Street and it still goes out. The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival in early May exists for the same reason.
So when Fernandina Beach needed something to lower at midnight, it did not reach for a ball.
What happens
A street party in the downtown historic district on 31 December: Centre Street closed to traffic, live music, food, a crowd, and a lit shrimp lowered as the year turns. Fireworks have featured in past years.
It is a proper community event rather than a ticketed spectacle — the sort of thing where the crowd is a mix of locals and visitors and the scale is human.
Why downtown works for this
The historic district is the right shape for a street party. Eight blocks of Victorian and Queen Anne storefronts, closed to cars, lit, with the marina at the bottom and twenty-plus restaurants and bars along it. You are not standing in a car park waiting for a countdown; you are in a nineteenth-century street.
Practicalities
Book dinner early. Downtown restaurants take New Year's Eve reservations well ahead, and walking in at nine on 31 December is not a plan.
Book accommodation earlier still. The winter holidays are one of the four periods that fill Amelia Island, along with spring, the Shrimp Festival and Concours week.
Park on the edge and walk in. Centre Street closes to traffic, and the free public lots around the district are the answer. Do not plan to move a car at midnight.
Dress for it. December on Amelia Island is mild rather than warm, and the waterfront is exposed. Evening temperatures can be genuinely cool by Florida standards and there is wind off the river. Bring more than you think.
Getting home. Ride-share coverage on the island is thinner than in a city and New Year's Eve is the worst night of the year for it. If you are staying at a south-end resort, sort the return before you go out — or better, stay downtown or oceanside for this one.
Dates and details
The event happens on 31 December; everything else about it — the exact schedule, whether fireworks are on the programme, road closures, whether any element is ticketed — is set annually by the organisers and we have not confirmed the current year's arrangements.
Check the organiser's own information before you plan around it. We publish no schedule we have not verified. See our editorial policy.
The rest of December downtown
Dickens on Centre, a Victorian Christmas street festival, runs earlier in the month in the same streets — and the genuinely Victorian storefronts make its premise convincing rather than themed. The Fernandina tree lighting and a boat parade run on their own separate dates.
December is downtown Fernandina Beach's best month, and the Shrimp Drop is the end of it.
