Dickens on Centre works because downtown Fernandina Beach does not need a set built for it. The Victorian and Queen Anne storefronts along Centre Street are the real thing, and in December, with the street closed and lit, the festival's premise stops being a costume theme and starts being convincing.
Held each December in the historic district, it puts costumed characters, carollers, a market, street performers and family entertainment along the closed blocks of Centre Street.
What to expect
A street festival rather than a ticketed show: browsing, eating, music, and a lot of families. Individual elements — some performances, some attractions — have historically been ticketed while the street itself is free to walk. Evening is the better half of the day, once the lighting does its work.
Planning
Downtown parking is the constraint, as with any festival here. Park once in a public lot on the edge of the district and walk in. Restaurants downtown take reservations well ahead for these weekends.
December on Amelia Island is mild rather than warm — evening temperatures can be genuinely cool by Florida standards, and the waterfront is exposed. Bring a layer.
Dates and tickets
The festival sets its dates and its ticketing each year and we do not publish an unconfirmed schedule. Check the organiser's site, and note that Fernandina Beach also runs separate Christmas events — the tree lighting and the boat parade among them — on their own dates in the same month.
Dates for this year
We have not yet confirmed this year’s dates with the organiser, so we are not publishing
one. Recurrence pattern: Annually in December.
Check the organiser’s own listing before booking travel — festival dates on Amelia Island
move by a week or more between years.
