What July actually feels like

July is the hottest month of the year and the humidity does not let up overnight. The beach is the only comfortable place to be between noon and five, and even there the difference between the water and the parking lot is startling.

A low-tide morning in July is the single best beach experience on the island: hundreds of yards of hard flat sand, warm water, and the sandbars exposed for wading.

The ocean in July

At 82.7°F the water is 10.1°F above the island’s annual average of 72.6°F. No cooling effect at all — shade and water matter more than the sea. The air reaches 90.7°F, a gap of 8°F over the sea — noticeable when you first get in, and gone within a minute. Ocean figures are means of hourly readings at the nearest NOAA sensor with a long record, 30 km south at Mayport — see ocean temperature by month.

Rain and storms

July averages 4.96″ across about 9.3 wet days, against 49.93″ for the year. That is near-daily afternoon thunderstorms rather than all-day rain. July falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs 1 June to 30 November with its statistical peak in early September. That is a season, not a forecast — see our hurricane season guide for what it actually means for a booking.

What to pack

  • nothing warm at all — the evening stays in the seventies
  • a light rain shell rather than an umbrella; the storms arrive with wind
  • sun cover that works at midday: hat, shirt, and more water than you think
  • swimwear you will actually use — the ocean is warm this month
  • insect repellent for dusk near the marsh

If the weather does not co-operate

Anything inland or unshaded — the Greenway, the fort ramparts, a bike ride — moves to before nine or after six. The tide matters more than the forecast for a beach day — a high tide on a narrow access leaves very little sand — so check today's tides before you commit to a stretch of beach.

Crowds and cost

The busiest month. Everything needs booking, and the Fourth of July weekend is its own event. We do not publish rates: they move constantly and we will not quote a figure we have not verified.
