Brett's is built out over the water at the Fernandina Harbor Marina, which makes it the closest thing on Amelia Island to dining on the Amelia River rather than looking at it.
The location does the work
The restaurant sits at the very bottom of Centre Street, past the last of the Victorian storefronts, on the marina docks. Windows on the water, the shrimp fleet tied up outside, and the whole west-facing sweep of the river and the Georgia marsh beyond it.
Because downtown Fernandina Beach faces west, this is a sunset room. The island's Atlantic side gets the sunrise; the river side gets the end of the day, and this is one of the two or three places to be for it.
What it is
A white-tablecloth-adjacent waterfront restaurant of a familiar coastal type: seafood, steaks, chicken, a decent wine list, and a menu that is more conventional than the newer downtown kitchens. It has been a fixture on this waterfront long enough that a lot of visitors know the name before they arrive.
That conventionality is a feature depending on who you are feeding. If you have a table with a range of ages and appetites and you want everyone to find something without negotiation, this works. If you want the island's most interesting cooking, downtown has newer rooms doing that.
When to go
Sunset, and early. The window tables are the point and they go first. Booking is the sensible approach, and asking specifically for a window when you book is more sensible still.
Lunch is the underrated slot: the same view, considerably quieter, and the marina traffic — working boats, charters, the occasional cargo ship heading for the port — is more interesting in daylight.
Where it sits in a downtown evening
At the bottom of everything. The rooftop bars are directly above the waterfront a few doors along, the whole historic district is uphill behind you, and free public parking is a block or two back. You can drink on a rooftop, eat here, and walk Centre Street afterwards without moving a car.
Practical notes
We have not confirmed the current address, phone, hours, reservation policy or price band with the restaurant. Downtown hours contract from autumn through spring and several kitchens close days midweek, so check before you plan an evening around it — particularly if you want a window at sunset.
